When the Tornado Struck…

"Damaged Memories"

“Damaged Memories”

When Winter Storm Goliath pummeled Dallas, Texas, with a fist full of tornadoes, my husband and I were 300 miles away enjoying a quiet Christmas weekend with family. Our apartment, however, was much closer to the devastation—a mere mile from where one tornado rearranged a block of homes into a wasteland. Gas lines cracked, powerlines snapped, electricity was cut off, houses were flattened, and people lost their lives. And yet my husband and I came home to a part of the city unaffected from the disaster. Our cat was fine. Our apartment was untouched. Even our car was undamaged. Everything looked so normal. And yet a mile down the road, normal is still the furthest thing from anyone’s mind. People are dead. Homes are destroyed. Families are ravaged. Lives are altered forever. That could have been my husband and me. If the tornado had struck a mile closer, it would have been. The swirling gale of emotions I feel this week range from gratefulness at being spared to sorrow and anger for those who weren’t so fortunate.

There is only one constructive way I know to handle a situation like this: give. I am compelled to ask that you join me in helping lighten the burden of those families less fortunate than us. For those of you who live near Garland, several area churches are still taking donations of food, water, gift cards, and money. You can find the full list of specific needs here at: https://garlandtx.recovers.org/. For those not so local, I ask that you consider making a donation to World Vision at http://donate.worldvision.org/ways-to-give/by-category/poverty-in-america/ or the Salvation Army at http://www.salvationarmydfw.org/. Both of these organizations are working locally and across the country to help families hurt by this storm. Thank you so much for your show of love to our neighbors in need!

Until next time, may we each rewrite our world for the better.
